Citizens Police Academy

In keeping with its mission of Community Policing, the Somerset Police Department conducts an annual Citizens Police Academy.

The goal of the Citizens Police Academy is to establish partnerships within the community it serves through education, interaction and cooperation. It is hoped that all participants will gain a better understanding of policing and the Police Officers who serve their community. Participants will develop insight into the many discretionary situations they face each day they come to work.

The Citizen Police Academy is open to any Somerset resident, business owner or high school student over 15 years of age who has an interest in law enforcement. High School age candidates must be held in good standing within the school system. A parental waiver will be required for those under 18 to attend the academy.

All instructors are trained law enforcement professionals. The curriculum typically includes lectures and “hands on” exercises in Criminal Law, Constitutional Law, Drug Enforcement, Officer Safety, Patrol Operations, K-9 Demonstration, Crash Reconstruction, Use of Force as well as several other important topics. At the conclusion of the Academy, there is a 4-hour ride along with a certified Field Training Officer. Class dates will be posted on this website as they are announced.
